چکیده

We discuss the relationship between the bulk-boundary correspondence in Rehren’s algebraic holography (and in other ‘fixed-background’, QFT-based, approaches to holography) and in mainstream string-theoretic ‘Maldacena AdS/CFT’. Especially, we contrast the understanding of black-hole entropy from the point of view of QFT in curved spacetime – in the framework of ’t Hooft’s ‘brick wall’ model – with the understanding based on Maldacena AdS/CFT. We show that the brickwall modification of a Klein Gordon field in the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state on 1+2 dimensional Schwarzschild AdS (BTZ) has a well-defined boundary limit with the same temperature and entropy as the brick-wall-modified bulk theory. One of our main purposes is to point out a close connection, for general AdS/CFT situations, between the puzzle raised by Arnsdorf and Smolin regarding the relationship between Rehren’s algebraic holography and mainstream AdS/CFT and the puzzle embodied in the ‘correspondence principle’ proposed by Mukohyama and Israel in their work on the brick-wall approach to black hole entropy. Working on the assumption that similar results will hold for bulk QFT other than the Klein Gordon field and for Schwarzschild AdS in other dimensions, and recalling the first author’s proposed resolution to the Mukohyama-Israel puzzle based on his ‘matter-gravity entanglement hypothesis’, we argue that, in Maldacena AdS/CFT, the algebra of the boundary CFT is isomorphic only to a proper subalgebra of the bulk algebra, albeit (at non-zero temperature) the (GNS) Hilbert spaces of bulk and boundary theories are still the ‘same’ – the total bulk state being pure, while the boundary state is mixed (thermal). We also argue from the finiteness of its boundary (and hence, on our assumptions, also bulk) entropy at finite temperature, that the Rehren dual of the Maldacena boundary CFT cannot itself be a QFT and must, instead, presumably be something like a string theory.

Nahm ’ s equations , N = 1 ∗ domain walls , and D - strings in AdS 5 × S 5

We consider the following two problems: classical domain walls in the N = 1∗ mass deformation of the maximally supersymmetric Yang Mills theory, and D-strings as external magnetic sources in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that they are both described by Nahm’s equations with unconventional boundary conditions, and analyze the relevant moduli space of solutions. We argue that...

Janus within Janus

We found a simple and interesting generalization of the non-supersymmetric Janus solution in type IIB string theory. The Janus solution can be thought of as a thick AdSd-sliced domain wall in AdSd+1 space. It turns out that the AdSd-sliced domain wall can support its own AdSd−1-sliced domain wall within it. Indeed this pattern persists further until it reaches the AdS2-slice of the domain wall ...

Softly - Broken N = 4 Supersymmetry in the Large - N Limit

We calculate the exact values of the holomorphic observables of N = 4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory deformed by mass terms which preserve N = 1 SUSY. These include the chiral condensates in each massive vacuum of the theory as well as the central charge which determines the tension of BPS saturated domain walls interpolating between these vacua. Several unexpected features emerge in th...

Toward the AdS/CFT gravity dual for High Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence we discuss the gravity dual of a heavy-ion-like collision in a strongly coupled N = 4 SYM gauge theory. We suggest a setting in which two colliding walls are made of non-dynamical heavy quarks and antiquarks, which allows to treat the process in classical string approximation. Some string have ends on two outgoing walls, and thus are being “stretched...
